Why The Sun is SO Important!

This came in my email this morning from The Daily Dose by Dr. William Campbell Douglas. Read right to the end, especially about sunscreen!

Why you shouldn't shrink from the sun


Despite what the panic police want you to believe, the sun is not the main cause of deadly skin cancer. But your relatives probably are.

Two new studies published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology link melanoma to genetics. One study looked at twins -- and found that when one twin got melanoma, the odds of contracting the disease skyrocketed in the other.

A separate study looked at family histories, and found that having a relative with any form of skin cancer increases your own odds of getting any form of skin cancer.

Remember, skin cancer isn't one condition. There are several forms of the disease, and the most common ones -- which are linked to ultraviolet light such as sunlight -- are benign, never fatal and easily treated in simple outpatient procedures.

The one you should fear -- melanoma -- is far rarer, potentially deadly and has nothing to do with the sun. In fact, a lack of sun can worsen it.

Think about this. Years ago, did you hear anyone worrying about melanoma?

Of course not! And it's not because we were ignorant and stupid. It's because fewer people had it.

Then, starting in 1973, melanoma cases began climbing -- right around the time we stopped going outside.

One study in Australia -- one of the sunniest places on earth -- found that office workers were more likely to get melanoma than lifeguards. Another found that melanoma is more common in Ohio than sun-soaked Florida.

Another study, published this summer in Nature Genetics, found that the number of moles you have (another genetic condition) is one of the strongest risk factors for melanoma. Not the sun.

It's so clear you'd have to be blinded by the sun not to see it... yet most so-called professionals still refuse to make the connection -- probably because so many of them profit off our bizarre and unnecessary fear of bright afternoons.

So stop buying sunscreen. Some studies show that this gunk can actually increase your risk of skin cancer. Then, be sure to spend a little more time in the sun. Get back inside before you burn, but not because you fear cancer -- but because sunburn hurts.

Swine Flu Video

This video is a must see, only in that it explains how we catch the swine flu and any other disease. It is really a video to get you to buy a book, but you don't need to do that. Eat More Color!

This came in my mail today from HSI. I am an avid fruit and vegetable eater. Now I would like you to be. Look at what this survey revealed! and read to the end to find out about ovarian cancer and eating plant fiber!

A national nutrition survey revealed troubling results about our eating habits.
Nearly 90 percent of us don't eat enough foods that contain blue/purple phytonutrients

Read What You Eat!

Again, I feel this is so important, so I have posted another Rule to Good Nutrition. Read your labels - 5 or less is okay but natural is better.

Here’s a rule of healthy eating that will serve you well when picking out foods for your family: The shorter the ingredients list, the healthier the food. (One of the worst foods we’ve ever found, the Baskin-Robbins Heath Shake, has 73 ingredients—and, by the way, a whopping 2,310 calories and more than 3 days’ worth of saturated fat! What happened to the idea that a milk shake was, um, milk and ice cream? Let’s be grateful that Baskin-Robbins finally pulled this monstrosity from their menus.) The FDA maintains a list of more than 3,000 ingredients that are considered safe to eat, but we’ve found reasons for concern for a number of the additives on that long list, and any one of them could wind up in your next box of mac ’n’ cheese.

According to USDA reports, most of the sodium in the American diet comes from packaged and processed foods. Naturally occurring salt accounts for only 12 percent of total intake, while 77 percent is added by food manufacturers.

What to Drink Instead of Sugary Beverages

Too many of us keep in mind the adage “watch what you eat,” and we forget another serious threat to our health: We don’t watch what we drink. In fact, according to research from the University of North Carolina, Americans now slurp up nearly 25 percent of their calories in liquid form—nearly double the rate we used to drink just 20 years ago. One study found that sweetened beverages constituted more than half (51 percent) of all beverages consumed by fourth- through sixth-grade students. The students who consumed the most sweetened beverages took in approximately 330 extra calories per day, and on average they ate less than half the amount of real fruit than did their peers who drank unsweetened or lightly sweetened beverages.

One important strategy is to keep cold, filtered water in a pitcher in the fridge. You might even want to keep some cut-up limes, oranges, or lemons nearby for kids to flavor their own water with. A UK study showed that in classrooms with limited access to water, only 29 percent of students met their daily needs; free access to water led to higher intake.

Another important strategy: Be extra careful about the juice you purchase. Too many “juices” are little more than sugar water masquerading as the real thing. Ocean Spray Cran-Raspberry, for instance, has just 15 percent real fruit juice. The other 85 percent? High-fructose corn syrup and water. Make sure the juice you buy says “100 percent Fruit Juice” on the label, and try to choose one made from a single fruit, not a mix of high-sugar fruits like white grapes, which are commonly used in fruit juice blends.

Keeping Ourselves and Our Children at a Healthy Weight

This morning, I read 6 Rules of Good Nutrition on http://eatthis.menshealth.com/slide/beware-portion-distortion. I felt it was so important.

Snack portions aren’t the only things that have increased wildly in size. Since 1977, hamburgers have increased by 97 calories, French fries by 68 calories, and Mexican foods by 133 calories, according to analysis of the Nationwide Food Consumption Survey.

A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine looked at 63,380 individuals’ drinking habits over a span of 19 years. The results show that for children ages 2 to 18, portions of sweetened beverages increased from 13.1 ounces in 1977 to 18.9 ounces in 1996.

One easy way to short-circuit this growing trend? Buy smaller bowls and cups. A recent study at the Children’s Nutrition Research Center in Houston, Texas, shows that 5- and 6-year-old children will consume a third more calories when presented with a larger portion. The findings are based on a sample of 53 children who were served either 1- or 2-cup portions of macaroni and cheese.

10 Simple Tips to Reduce Your Chemical Exposures and Your Child's

You can limit your exposure to environmental chemicals as much as possible with the following tips:

1. Buy and eat, as much as possible, organic produce and free-range, organic foods.
2. Rather than eating fish, which is largely contaminated with PCBs and mercury, consume a high-quality purified krill oil.
3. Avoid processed foods -- remember that they're processed with chemicals!
4. Only use natural cleaning products in your home. Most health food stores will have these available or you can search online for them.
5. Switch over to natural brands of toiletries, including shampoo, toothpaste, antiperspirants and cosmetics. Same sources here, either your local health food store or you can search online.
6. Avoid spraying insect repellants that contain DEET on your body. There are safe, effective and natural alternatives out there.
7. Remove any metal fillings. Amalgams are a major source of mercury and any metal, including gold, can cause biogalvanism. Be sure to have this done by a qualified biological dentist. Although nearly any dentist is technically qualified to replace your amalgam fillings, far less than 95 percent have any clue on how to do it properly so your risk of mercury exposure is minimized.
8. Avoid using artificial air fresheners, dryer sheets, fabric softeners or other synthetic fragrances as they can pollute the air you are breathing.
9. Avoid artificial food additives of all kind, including artificial sweeteners and MSG.
10. Limit your use of drugs (prescription and over-the-counter) as much as possible. Drugs are chemicals too, and they will leave residues and accumulate in your body over time.

Cure Ringworm With ....

I help out at a great dog shelter in Playa del, Carmen, the Peanut Pet Shelter. They have a great website at http://peanutpetshelter.org/. They are doing a fabulous job and work very hard. As of now, they have 103 dogs they have rescued. They look after them, spay and neuter them and adopt them out. Clap, Clap! Back to ringworm.

Some of the people who volunteer there have gotten ringworm. On the way over to the shelter, the volunteers were talking about natural rememdies to it. One fellow from Denmark told everyone that if you burn a piece of paper in a glass bowl. Place the tar that remains on your ringworm and it will go away. Sure enough, one of the fellows went home and tried it and it has disappeared.

I imagine you could use this for athlete's feet too as ringworm is athlete's feet on the body!

Dr. Mercola does it again! How simple is this? If only people could understand the benefits of not drinking soft drinks! It and junk food contains fructose. Cure Sore Throat With Cayenne Pepper

This is a fantastice way to get rid of a sore throat. Cayenne pepper has the most amazing healing powers. Just google it! As for the hotness after, use sugar or bread. Read this entire page. So many people benefited from this remedy.

And DON'T use milk to "ease the hotness" when you're sick- avoid dairy products."

Euclayptus for Stuffy nose or Plugged nose
